Customised meal plans & interventions can lower blood sugar levels, reduce insulin needs

CASE STUDY & SUCCESS STORIES

Name: Leela

Age: 61 years

BMI: 31.2 kg/m2

Profession: Retired

Location- Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh

Case history- Leela, a senior citizen from Vijayawada, was obese and had uncontrolled diabetes despite being on 70 units of insulin for several years. Her children live in the USA, so she was afraid of taking on a nutrition program as she had to do it all alone. Her fasting sugar level was high at all times, and that’s when her family convinced her to approach a nutritionist. She was also suffering from several other health conditions like high blood pressure, thyroid, IBS, rheumatoid arthritis and frequent episodes of fever for which she was taking multiple medications that made her weak and reduced her mobility significantly. She needed to take injections every month to mitigate her knee pains and inflammation. Poor gut health and IBS did not allow her to have sufficient fibre in her meals, which was essential to reduce her sugar levels. Her doctor also advised her to reduce 15 kgs to improve her health. She also complained of mood swings due to insulin spikes and dips.

Analysis by the best nutritionist for IBS, Hyderabad, Telangana, India- Her blood reports revealed she had uncontrolled diabetes (HbA1c-7, FBS- 392 mg/dl), high GGT (77.7 U/L) due to excessive use of paracetamol, High TG (231 mg/dl), high infection, was malnourished and anaemic.

Approach by the best nutritionist for IBS, Hyderabad, Telangana, India: Initially, we decided to work on her poor gut health and manage her sugar levels. We gave her good quality proteins like mutton bone soup, tofu, and river fish, which improved her gut health, whereas mutton bone soup and hemp milk reduced inflammation. This will also help to manage her sugar spikes by lowering the glycemic load of the meals. She also included easy-to-digest fibre-rich vegetables that were a part of the IBS green list, along with soft whole grains like rice and quinoa. Because of her knee pains, we asked her to start with 5-minute walks of 100 steps at a time and some fidgeting-based physical activity. She must stay positive and motivated; hence, the nutritionist team constantly stays in touch with her. As her IBS condition improved, she was able to tolerate a variety of foods which she couldn’t earlier. We provided her with diabetic-friendly, low-glycemic meals with appropriate macronutrient combinations, which helped manage her glucose levels and made her feel full and satisfied. Following our travel guidelines allowed her to eat mindfully and did not worsen her digestive problems.

Results: Within the first two weeks, she could control her sugar without any insulin. Her HbA1c without any insulin and minimal diabetic medication reduced to 6.1. Over 6 months, she lost 13kgs with minimal physical activity. Her gut health improved significantly, with fewer episodes of indigestion. Earlier, she would have digestive problems if she ate at parties, but now she is able to tolerate a larger variety of food. She no longer requires knee injections as her inflammation has reduced drastically. She had a complete turnover in her blood reports. Her fasting sugar level dropped to 132 mg/dl to 169 mg/dl, TG levels reached 160 mg/dl to 130 mg/dl and GGT from 77.7 U/L to 23.8 U/L. There were significant improvements in HDL and thyroid levels, too. Her IBS and digestion issues were resolved. Her mood swings, hunger pangs, and energy levels were also improved. Now, she can walk 6000 steps daily and travel without worrying about her health. She is able to sustain her improved health without any insulin, even while travelling enjoying her favourite and social gatherings.
