CASE STUDY & SUCCESS STORIES

Name: Shiva

Age: 51

Sex: Male

BMI: 28,Overweight

Case History: Shiva is a 51-year-old businessman is totally focused on his business and professional growth and in the process gained weight in his yearly medical check and realised that all his health parameters were way above the range. His HbA1C was 8, fasting sugar was 192mg/dl, cholesterol was 193mg/dl and his triglycerides was 408mg/dl. As he was shocked with his results, he got them tested in various labs but the results were in a similar range.

He followed fad diets as a result of his poor dietary choices and was misled by several myths, such as the idea that cutting out oil and fats would help him lose weight. In order to lower his blood sugar levels, he consumed smaller meals that included more nutritious grains like millet and jowar. He did not consume red meat as his lipid profile was high, he thought by consuming it would only make his condition worse. He would also consume only egg whites and avoided the yolks entirely since they were high in cholesterol.

Approach: Our first step was to confirm that his nutritional approach was independent of fad diet practices. During our initial consultation, we provided him with an explanation of the reasoning behind each misconception he had been holding onto. Red meat might be a better option for Indians, as in India it is grass-fed animal and eaten in the right proportions at the right time is heart friendly. In his meal plan, we included healthy grass-fed non-vegetarian sources of protein that would work for his body type along with an adequate variety of vegetables and Indian traditional grains like millet. We kept a check on the time interval between each meal so that the body could live on its own body fat as a preferred source of energy. He is a busy businessman and travels the globe and he needs tips and tricks to make healthy choices when he wasn’t at home. We helped plan his caloric intake in all contexts of his life such as business parties, social evenings etc. We helped him choose a healthy exercise regimen that was short and effective.

Results: His blood sugar levels decreased to 85mg/dl within a month, which was a remarkable improvement. He had a blood test done after 2 months and noticed that his uric acid levels had decreased from 8 to 3.5 while he was still consuming red meat and other non-vegetarian foods. His lipid profile was in a very healthy range, his best ever in years. Additionally, he managed to lose 10 kg in 3 months and maintains it to this day.
