CASE STUDY & SUCCESS STORIES
Name: Bhushan
Age:60 years
Location: Hyderabad
Case History: Bhushan, a 60-year-old retired corporate individual with a history of clinical depression, had been managing his diabetes primarily through medication. His HbA1C levels ranged between 6.0 - 6.6%, indicating good control of his blood sugar levels. However, his weight assessment revealed that he was overweight, with a BMI of 27.35 kg/m².
In addition to these concerns, Bhushan struggled with persistent gut health issues for the past 10 years, including gas, bloating, and frequent loose stools. Notably, he experienced an urgent need to pass stools 6-7 times a day, often immediately after meals. These patterns disrupted his daily routine, significantly affecting his meeting schedules, social engagements, travel and ability to carry out regular tasks. Further, he would feel bloated after the meals and pass a lot of gas the intensity would vary every day and also be very low in energy throughout the day.
Motivated to address these challenges and improve his well-being, Bhushan strongly desires to adopt a sustainable, healthy, and balanced diet. He also aimed to deepen his understanding of his body’s metabolism, nutrient absorption patterns, and how his body responds to various inputs, taking a proactive approach to managing his health.
Approach by the best nutritionist, and dietician in Hyderabad, Telangana, India Deepika Chalasani:
Upon closely examining Bhushan’s stool patterns, it was observed that the intensity of gassiness and bloatedness varied every day and after every meal and he consistently experienced an urge to pass stools immediately after meals. This meant food intolerances were triggering his frequent washroom cycles. To investigate further, we conducted a food intolerance test, which confirmed that Bhushan was intolerant to several foods, potentially contributing to his digestive issues. He was surprised that foods like carrots, garlic, and onions were on his high intolerant list. Based on these findings, our approach involved a structured "elimination and reintroduction" plan. Initially, we removed or restricted the identified trigger foods from his diet to alleviate his symptoms.
We supported his gut health with supplements, including digestive enzymes, biofilm-reducing agents, and spore-enhancing supplements. Gradually, we reintroduced certain foods in a controlled manner to assess his tolerance levels and rebuild dietary variety.
This method was carefully designed to not only address Bhushan’s gut health and reduce his stool frequency but also support his broader health goals. By managing his symptoms, facilitating weight loss, and enhancing nutrient absorption, we aimed to improve his energy levels and overall productivity throughout the day. This holistic strategy ensured his diet remained sustainable and aligned with his lifestyle and health needs.
To enhance Bhushan’s morning routine and also give him comfort, we introduced a handful of almonds paired with a cup of black coffee. To further boost his fibre intake and address his gut health, we added sautéed vegetables such as mushrooms, bell peppers, and lettuce, as well as fresh salads. Considering Bhushan’s specific health needs and his goal of weight loss, we incorporated high-quality protein sources into his diet to support his metabolic health and overall well-being. These included tofu, eggs, and whole legumes like green moong, chana (chickpeas), kala chana, hemp milk, soy curd and protein shakes. High-protein foods not only promote satiety and aid in weight management but also play a crucial role in stabilizing blood sugar levels, preserving muscle mass, and supporting a healthy metabolism. This balanced approach was designed to address his gut health issues, optimize nutrient absorption, and align with his health and weight-loss goals.
To support his gut health goals, we introduced hand-pounded rice, quinoa, and Shvasa green roti, beans and foods rich in soluble fiber for a healthier gut. These complex carbohydrate sources were chosen for their low glycaemic index, which promotes slow digestion, aiding in stable blood sugar levels and reducing strain on the gut.
Hand-pounded rice and quinoa are not only gentle on the digestive system but are also rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals that nourish gut bacteria and enhance digestive function. Shvasa green roti further supports gut health by providing complex carbohydrates along with the added benefits of amla and drumstick leaves, which are high in fibre and antioxidants, helping to reduce inflammation and support a balanced microbiome.
Additionally, we guided him in choosing gut-friendly fruits with a lower glycaemic index and high fibre content, which improve stool consistency and foster a healthy digestive environment. This holistic dietary approach helps maintain gut integrity while supporting overall well-being.
These dietary changes were implemented to address his nutritional requirements and enhance overall health, aligning with his lifestyle and goals.
Results
After three months of following a structured plan based on the principles of removal, restriction, and reintroduction, Bhushan experienced remarkable improvements in his gut health and overall well-being. His weight was reduced from 82 kg to 76 kg, leading to a decrease in BMI from 27.35 kg/m² to 26 kg/m². This gradual weight loss not only moved him closer to a healthier weight range but also alleviated the strain on his digestive and cardiovascular systems, improving metabolic function and blood sugar regulation.
Most significantly, Bhushan achieved exceptional progress in his gut health. His bowel movements decreased from 6-7 times per day to a regular and manageable time per day on most occasions and once a day on some occasions. This change allowed him to regain control over his daily life, enabling him to perform routine tasks and indulge in his love for travel without the anxiety of frequent or urgent bowel movements. These improvements are indicative of a balanced and nourished gut microbiome, facilitated by a diet rich in fibre, antioxidants, and low-glycemic foods.
Additionally, Bhushan reported increased energy levels and all his bloating and gassiness disappeared, both of which are strong indicators of improved digestive efficiency and reduced inflammation. By removing gut-irritating foods, restricting potential triggers, and gradually reintroducing nutrient-dense alternatives like hand-pounded rice, quinoa, and green roti, his digestive system was given the support it needed to heal and function optimally.
These outcomes highlight the profound impact a personalized, nutrient-dense diet can have on gut health. By prioritizing gut-friendly choices, Bhushan was able to restore balance, enhance nutrient absorption, and reduce systemic stress, paving the way for sustained health and vitality.
