Incorrect intermittent fasting makes you gain weight and comes with some serious health issues.

CASE STUDY & SUCCESS STORIES

Name: Sreedevi Rao

Age: 58years

Gender: Female

BMI: 24

Case history: Sreedevi is a high-profile senior executive. She was gaining weight over the years. She reached at a point where she gained 6-7kgs more than her ideal body weight. The excess weight started to cause back pain. She decided to follow intermittent fasting with an eating window of 9-5 pm. She is extremely disciplined and due to the covid scenario, she hardly used to go out for social engagements. She used to maintain fasting to feasting ratio of 16:8. She decided to introduce ancient grains like millet into her diet. After 3 months of following intermittent fasting, her backaches increased, and she did not lose any weight, in-fact gained a couple of more kgs. She decided to get tests done and to her shock, all her lipid parameters had increased and all were over the range. Her triglyceride was 288mg/dal and LDL was 204mg/dl. Her HbA1c reached a peak of 7%. Thus, with all the imbalanced health parameters, she finally decided to seek help and consult us.

Approach by the best weight loss nutritionist: Her food diary clearly suggested that while she was consuming healthy grains and she was disciplined, her whole day’s food clearly was imbalanced and loaded with carbs. It was important to educate her as Indians are among the few races in the world where carbs convert to fat in the body. We kept the positive parts of her current regimen like keeping the same eating window and giving her balanced meals. We included a variety of healthy carbs in the form of vegetables and fruits. We included good fats like omega 3 seeds into her plan to take her of her lipid parameters. Since she converted to being an eggetarian, we included eggs, whole dhals, soy protein and insulin-resistance-friendly dairy products. Since her creatinine was high normal, we started with a protein of 0.8 grams per body weight. we also made sure that enough vegetables were incorporated into her diet so that her body becomes alkaline. Her earlier diet lacked balanced and wholesome nutrition, hence we gave her a diet with adequate macros and micros ratio. We planned a meal with appropriate carbs:protein: a fat ratio that supported her body type.

Results: Within 3 months, her lipid profile came down within the normal range, with triglycerides at 164mg/dl & LDL cholesterol at 170mg/dl. She lost the excess 6-7 kg and her Hba1c came down to 6.6.% in 6 months her triglycerides further went down to 100 mg/dl and her LDL went down to 120 mg/dl and her creatinine levels also reduced It was a huge reversal with all parameters in place. Her back pain disappeared and she was able to walk around her home which is in the mountains comfortably and was able to do air travel without any discomfort. She did not need support for back pains anymore. She was able to walk in elevation which she couldn’t earlier. She was able to travel without any back pains or discomfort.
