By Indian Diabetes, I mean the Type 2 Diabetes in which the Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS) is high but the Post Meal Blood Sugar (also called PPS, short for Post Prandial Sugar) is normal. This is the Diabetes with excess Insulin and not with low Insulin as most diabetics perceive. Most of the Indian Diabetics start their Diabetic journey with this pattern of blood sugar and continue to be with it, in some cases even for decades, until their bodies stop producing excess Insulin.
When the speed at which the Sugar from the Meal enters the blood at faster rate than the muscles can accept, the blood sugar level rises. Since high blood sugar is injurious to the body, it responds by spiking the insulin to normalize the blood sugar as quickly as possible.
The Insulin spike makes the Liver resistant to the actions of Insulin. Body saves part of the Meal calories in the Liver as Carbs and in the Fat tissue as Fat, to feed the body in between the Meals. One of the functions of the Insulin is to make the Liver release these stored calories only when the blood sugar levels drop. But when Liver gets resistant to the actions of Insulin, it pumps the Sugar into the blood, even when the blood sugar level is high. That is the reason for high FBS even 10 to 12 hours after the previous Meal. The flip side of the high FBS is, it prevents the body living on its Fat stores. This is the reason for Indians having one of the highest body fats in the world, although they don’t eat much fat.
Body can live on its Fat only if FBS is below 90 mg/dl which cannot be achieved by medicines. Only good nutrition and Exercise can lower the FBS – nutrition by reducing the speed with which the Sugar enters the blood and Exercise by making the muscles more receptive to Sugar.
Living on Body Fat, besides reversing the Diabetes has the following additional advantages:
