CASE STUDY & SUCCESS STORIES
Name: Vardhan (40 years), Sanjay (70 years), Uma (67 years)
Location: Hyderabad & Jaipur
Case Study and Analysis:
Vardhan came to us seeking help to improve his overall health, specifically to address issues of bloating, discomfort, constipation, and indigestion. He also had an elevated cholesterol and lipid profile and aimed to reduce these levels through a healthy, active lifestyle. Vardhan had been struggling with these digestive problems for several years and wanted to find a sustainable solution. Upon reviewing Vardhan's blood parameters, we discovered low vitamin D and B12 levels. He also suffered from significant constipation due to a low intake of complex carbohydrates and foods low in soluble and insoluble fibre, as well as low iron levels. We immediately started him on supplements for vitamins D and B12 and focused on dietary changes to address his constipation and iron deficiency.
As Vardhan resolved his long-standing health issues with new lifestyle habits, he signed up his father, Sanjay Sharma, and later his mother, Uma, who benefited significantly from the program. Sanjay Sharma, aged 70, had been on diabetes and blood pressure medications for years and was at risk of heart disease. His diet primarily consisted of typical quick-digesting Indian food such as refined carbohydrates breakfast items like poha and upma, followed by lunch and dinner with roti, sabzi, dhal, and curd. These meals often left him low energy; therefore, he resorted to frequent cups of tea for an instant energy boost. An analysis of his diet recall showed that these foods were detrimental to his diabetes and blood pressure management. We needed gradual dietary changes to stabilise his blood sugar levels and improve his cardiovascular health.
Uma, Sanjay's wife, was inspired by the positive changes in her husband's health and decided to incorporate some of the healthy habits from the program. She had been suffering from chronic acidity, constipation, bloating, and poor sleep, and she hoped to see improvements in these areas by making dietary changes.
Approach by the Best Diabetes Nutritionist in Hyderabad, Telangana, India, Deepika Chalasani:
To improve Vardhan's fibre intake, we advised him to incorporate high-fibre foods to add bulk to his diet and ease constipation. We recommended avoiding wheat and switching to millet to support his gut health. Vardhan was wary of consuming protein such as paneer and eggs, fearing it would increase his cholesterol levels. We educated him on the importance of having adequate and appropriate protein to reduce his cholesterol levels. We suggested lighter protein options for his dinners and included a serving of green leafy vegetables to enhance his overall nutrient intake. Recognising the inflammatory nature of regular curd, especially for individuals with insulin resistance, we recommended he switch to hung curd. Moreover, we advised him to consume whole dals instead of regular variations to ensure a more balanced diet.
Given Sanjay Sharma's age, we slowly adjusted his dietary pattern to avoid overwhelming him. We replaced quick-digesting foods with slow-digesting alternatives to stabilise his blood sugar levels. We educated him on how some commonly perceived healthy foods, like milk, could raise sugar levels in people with diabetes. By making these adjustments, we aimed to reduce his medication and improve his overall health.
Observing the positive changes in her husband and son's health, Uma incorporated some of these dietary habits into her own routine. She started consuming slow-digesting foods and made healthier choices to address her chronic acidity and improve her sleep quality.
Results:
Within six months, Vardhan experienced significant improvements in his health. His cholesterol parameters improved, his triglyceride levels dropped from 171 mg/dL to 88 mg/dL, his energy levels increased, and his digestive issues were resolved. Inspired by these results, he encouraged his father, Sanjay Sharma, to join the program.
Sanjay Sharma's blood pressure normalised within 1.5 months, leading his doctor to take him off blood pressure medications he had been on for years. After three months, his HbA1c levels reduced from 7.8% to 5.8%, significantly lowering his diabetes medication dosage. These improvements drastically reduced his risk of heart disease.
By incorporating some of the healthy habits from the program, Uma saw her long-term chronic acidity and constipation disappear, and her sleep quality improved. Together, the family experienced overall well-being and felt more confident and energetic throughout. This case study highlights how a comprehensive nutritional approach by the best dietitian in Hyderabad can benefit the individual and the entire family.
