CASE STUDY & SUCCESS STORIES

Name: Varalakshmi

Age: 55

BMI: 29.21

Location: Hyderabad, India

Case History: Varalakshmi, a home maker came to us when her creatinine level was 2.1. Apart from that, she was suffering from diabetes, hypertension and diabetic retinopathy which led to poor eye health. She often felt depressed as she was not able to do her household chores all by herself which she was comfortable doing till a year back. Her eGFR reduced from 49 to 27 in just one month. Her blood reports depicted poor iron levels, her lipid profile was in range but she was on high dose of medication. She also had high insulin resistance. She was on 18 units of insulin in the morning and 12 units at night and her HbA1c was at 9.7. Her goal was to reverse her elevated creatinine levels, and reverse her diabetic retinopathy and correct nutritional deficiencies and get her stamina back.

Approach by the best dietitian, Hyderabad, Telangana, India: As her eGFR levels were very low, giving her a diet which supported kidney health was of prime importance. A CKD stage 3 friendly PRAL dietwith recommended food items that ensured that potassium and phosphorous where within the recommended range. Familiar and easy to digest vegetables such as cucumbers, cabbage, carrots, were included in her meal plan to balance fiber with nutrient density.Optimum protein to carb ratio was customized which fulfilled her micronutrient needs suitable to her kidney functioning. As she is vegetarian and was having protein digestibility issues, we gave her fit4life signature products that are nutrient dense and vegan. Complex carbohydrates, fiber rich foods and low glycemic bajra chilla, green rotis, vegan nachos, tofu, with probiotic protein viz. hung curd, omega 3 super seedswere given in order to control her blood sugar levels and improve her protein digestibility. Iron rich foods like beetroot and dates were included. The meal plan was designed such that it supported her gut health as well. Gradual incorporation of local and seasonal variety of foods was done as her mind did not accepted new addition of foods easily. Overall, the approach and meal plan given supported her kidney functioning, gut health and was customized accompanied with constant guidance and support throughout the program.

Results: With our support, her eGFRincreased to 36 in 3 months and her creatinine level from 2.1 reduced to 1.7 in 2 months and in 6 months, it reduced to 1.6. Her sugar levels reduced to within range and she did not require any insulin any more. In 6months she lost 12 kgs and has been maintaining her weight. She has seen significant improvement in her energy levels and go about doing her daily chores. There was a great improvement in her iron levels and other blood parameters. Her digestion issues resolved and she has started accepting new foods like mushrooms, hemp which are crucial for her health and recovery.
