CASE STUDY & SUCCESS STORIES
Name: Sai Purnima
Age: 32 years
Gender: Female
Location: USA
Profession: IT
Case History: Sai Purnima is a working professional living in the USA. She approached us for help with her weight loss. She was eating very less and keeping to portion control but instead of losing weight, she was gaining weight. She was facing severe hair loss. Since the weight gain was also showing up as also fatigue, tiredness and knee pains, she decided to approach us as she saw her cousin lose weight sustainably with us.
Analysis by a best clinical nutritionist, Hyderabad, Telangana, India: Past history, dietary recall and lifestyle choices suggested that she was having largely refined carbs in all 3 meals, starting her day with cereal, rice and curries for lunch and south Indian tiffin for dinner. She would feel full after consuming a small portion of food. Her blood report suggested severe Vitamin D & Iron deficiencies which explained the feeling of fullness and severe hair loss. She also has hypothyroid which was further making her tired and fatigued.
Approach by best clinical nutritionist/dietician: We analysed her food diary and saw that her diet was lacking the macronutrients like protein, complex carbohydrates and good fats and vitamins & minerals like iron and vit d supplementation. We helped her understand that she should not focus on having quick digesting meals. We mainly focused on putting her on a lean vegan protein that was rich in essential amino acids which were also easily digestible for her given her gut health. As she is a pure vegetarian and in the USA, we gave her food rich in soluble fibre like black beans, kidney beans and steal cut oats to aid improvement in gut health. Instead of regular white rice, we introduced hand-pounded rice as one of the good sources of fibre.
We helped her with planning and preparedness with meal prep ideas (for the week) with easy recipes. This was crucial as it helped her to eat on time keeping her work schedule in mind without many deviations.
She was advised to use quinoa, millet, nuts, tofu and paneer, cheese and hemp milk along with lots of vegetables and iron-rich foods to improve her iron levels (tofu, cashew nuts, chia seeds, hemp, and quinoa). As she was unable to exercise due to an injury, she was asked to do minimal activity and focus on food intake by using multivitamins.
Results: After following the program consistently, she was able to see improvements in her parameters. Her iron levels improved due to the foods given to her during the program. She lost 10 kgs in 2 1/2 months and has sustained it for a year unlike previously. She hair fall reduced significantly. Her overall energy levels improved significantly. Purnima was able to manage her professional life and meet her nutritional goals by what she learnt in her journey with us.
She reached out to us post a year after sustaining the weight loss as she gained 3 kgs and was concerned about it. We re-looked at her food diary, her overall water & fluid consumption through the day and her activity levels. We noticed she was consuming a particular kind of mineral water during the day that contained sugars thereby resulting in weight gain. She stopped taking the mineral water as advised by us and she lost the 3 kgs she had gained.
Balanced nutritional meals, along with activity and readiness can help lose and sustain weight loss even when occasionally indulging during special occasions, family gatherings, and festivals.
