Case History:Sowjanya is a working women and has 2 kids. She has ahectic personal and professional life and used to feel lethargic and complain about having low energy levels. She used to feel bloated quite often. She was also taking medications for hypothyroidism which further made her feel fatigued through the day. In the past, she tried to follow many dietbut could not sustain any diet as it was too cumbersome to follow.She came to us to help her with weight loss, with better energy levels and improve her digestive health.
Analysis by best clinical nutritionist: Past history, dietary recall and lifestyle choices. Her blood reports showed that she had high triglyceride levels and slightly high cholesterol levels. It also showed significantly high insulin resistance. Her B12 and D3 status was normal.
Approach by best weight lossnutritionist / dietician, Telangana, India:We analysed her food diary and saw that it was a grain centric diet with very less of other food groups such as protein, vegetables. Since she did not plan her food intake for the week, there was low diversity in the diet because she used to repeat her meals and ate leftovers quite often. She was also consuming whey protein in the morning which is quick releasing protein which further would aggravate her fatigue and is a contra indicator for insulin resistance condition. As her diet was not rich in vitamins and macronutrients she used to feel lethargic and fatigue. We designed a meal plan which was according to her body type and health goals. All the foods were Indian origin based as she prefers more Telugu dishes and preparations. We gave her fruits and a meal replacement shake with a slow releasing protein in the morning with flaxseeds powder which ensured inclusion of healthy fatty acids and optimum protein and at the same time would give her consistent energy. Hemp milk was added to her diet, as it is a vegan protein, a super food and a light breakfast that would keep her active throughout the day, would increase her omega 3 profile and support reduction of the triglycerides. We suggested her to include lots of vegetables in her diet and to eat a variety of not so cooked vegetables before her meals which ensured high fibre intake and optimum micronutrients. Good quality proteins like eggs, tofu, whole dals, cheese, paneer along with complex carbohydrates whole grains like quinoa, bajra, ragi, hand pound rice, sour dough bread, rye bread were included which were high in fiber and vitamins and less refined. We suggested her to make the protein in bulk and keep in the freezer for daily use to make sure that there is consistency in protein intake which is important for weight loss, consistent energy through the day. Probiotics like cheese, hemp, kefir were suggested and her meal plan was designed according to availability and accessibility in the US. Modifications were done in her meals according to her needs, social gathering and traveling. Apart from that, we also gave her education on how thyroid hormone functioning and food works together. Meal prepping was also taught. Constant support and guidance was provided.
Results:
With our support, she lost 15 pounds in 6 months and was able to sustain it despite frequent travelling. She was now able to prepare her own meals at home comfortably. She was able to eat variety of foods and manage her routine with her work. She sustained her weight despite traveling and eating her favorite food. Her cholesterol and triglyceride levels dropped to 202 and 109 respectively. Her gut health and washroom cycles improved. She no longer felt lethargic, fatigued and tired through the day and her energy levels significantly increased.
